The Duality of Life

By Abigail Mathenge

I don’t think I can say I’ve been more content with my life than I am right now.

Not that things are perfect but I’m at peace. I find peace easier. I’ve placed all the things that used to and still burden me in God’s hands and there’s this feeling of lightness I have that I haven’t felt since pre depression. It’s just a feeling I can’t explain because why do I wanna cry?

I used to feel so helpless, that nothing would work out for me and that’s why I ended up lying to my therapist that everything was fine, that I was doing good when I was still spiralling. It only got worse before it got better and my last year in high school and the beginning of uni might have been a hellhole but at least the last four months I haven’t felt worthless. I haven’t felt like I always need to change. I haven’t hated how I looked. I haven’t been constantly comparing myself to others.

For once in so very long, I feel like things are looking steadily up.
I don’t feel used. I’ve learnt to stand my ground. I easily refuse things that make me uncomfortable or nervous. I know when to step back and I like that. 16 year old me wouldn’t believe it but I’m so proud that she stuck around. I’m so glad that she pulled through.
Here’s to the 20th year of my life 😝
