Preteen & Adolescent Counselling

We offer individual counselling to preteens and adolescents (ages 10-17). The consultation session for preteens and adolescents is strictly in person.

Sessions for children ages 10-14 are strictly in person while sessions for children ages 15-17 can be in person, virtual or a mix of both.

Stages of therapy

Adults (18-26)

Stage 1

Reaching Out

This is when you request an appointment, and we agree on a day and time to meet, either in person or virtually, for a consultation.

Stage 2

Consultation

This stage is an opportunity for me to get to know you better and gain insight into what has brought you to therapy. This session will involve a lot of questions from my end to better understand the problem and its origin. You are also welcome to ask me whatever questions you may have. I will then propose the next course of action, and we will settle on what is best for you.

Stage 3

Psychotherapy

This stage consists of several sessions of talk therapy. Using an integrated approach, I will guide you in unpacking the problems that brought you to therapy. The frequency and duration of sessions depend on the individual’s needs. However, sessions are usually once a week and are typically an hour long.

Stage 4

Completion

At this stage, we wrap up your therapy sessions. I will assess your progress and suggest the completion of sessions. This will typically be our last session unless you feel the need for more. If more sessions are requested, we will discuss this again and agree on a way forward.

Stage 5

Support

Completing your regular sessions does not mean that you are not welcome back. You are always welcome to regular sessions whenever you feel you need them. You are always welcome to book check-in sessions whenever you need to.

Preteens and adolescents (10-18)

Stage 1

Reaching out

This is when you request an appointment, and we agree on a day and time to meet, either in person or virtually, for a consultation. Because the client is a minor, typically, their guardian will be the one booking the appointment.

Stage 2

Consultation

This stage will also involve the guardian(s). It is an opportunity for me to get to know the child and the guardian(s) better and gain insight into what has brought them to therapy. The session will involve a lot of questions from my end, mainly to the guardian(s), to better understand the problem and its origin. You are also welcome to ask me whatever questions you may have.

Stage 3

Getting to know the child

At this stage, I will ask the guardian(s) to leave the room, and I will spend some time with the child. This is a time for me to get to know the child better and help them feel as comfortable as possible. While adults can usually quickly discuss the problem, children need time to warm up and trust you. This stage usually involves games, artwork and light conversation. Several such sessions are necessary for some children before they feel comfortable enough. It is best to go at the child’s pace, so patience from the guardian(s) is essential at this stage.

Stage 4

Psychotherapy

This stage consists of several sessions of talk therapy. Using an integrated approach, I will guide the child in unpacking the problems that brought them to therapy. Art and games play a significant role in therapy with children and will be a major part of our sessions. The frequency and duration of sessions depend on each child’s needs. However, sessions are usually once a week and are typically an hour long. A guardian is required to accompany the child to each of their sessions. The guardian will not sit in the sessions; however, there are several occasions where I would need to talk to the guardian about the child’s progress and needs.

Stage 5

Completion

At this stage, we wrap up the therapy sessions. I will assess the child’s progress and suggest the completion of sessions. Once again, a guardian must be present for this stage. This will typically be our last session unless the guardian or the child feels the need for more. If more sessions are requested, we will discuss this again and agree on a way forward.

Stage 6

Support

Completing your regular sessions does not mean that you are not welcome back. You are always welcome to regular sessions whenever you feel you need them. You are always welcome to book check-in sessions whenever you need to.
