MENTAL SELF-HARM

Physical self harm causes terrible damages to our body. We bleed, we bruise, we get wounds that at times, are beyond repair.

Mental self-harm, is pretty much the same. Mental self-harm not only causes terrible damage to our minds but to our souls as well. It creates an unhealthy space for our being. The effects may be invisible, but the fact remains that mental self-harm is extremely hazardous and therefore one must be weary of it. However, we do not speak about it enough .

It ranges from the tiniest mental malpractice to the greater, more hazardous ones.

Jealousy, self-doubt, pessimism… these are but a few of the common negative mental practises . We pass most of them off as harmless. After all, they are just normal reactions to situations that don’t sit well with us . They are our defence mechanisms, we ALL do them …So we don’t pay mind to them , never stopping to ask ourselves what harm these practices are doing to us in the long run .

These ‘tiny’, ‘normal practices’, more often than not lead us into sinkholes that are extremely hard to get out of . Enough times, they do cause irreparable damage . That one minute of jealousy can eventually lead you to depression . That one minute of self-doubt can eventually cause such great damage to your self-esteem.

Yet, these practices, though hazardous, are quite easy to fall into. For most of us, they are a reflex action . They happen before we can give them much thought. It is therefore necessary for us to put in a constant, conscious effort to replace them with better healthier practices.

Acknowledge these negative mental practices, being aware solves at least half the problem . Honestly examine yourself and list down all these practices. From there, you begin to fight your battle. You will fall ,several times, but don’t give up . You must persist . Keep fighting . Catch yourself each time you are about to fall into these practices . Avoid situations that encourage the growth of these negative mental practices and slowly, begin to replace them with positive practises .

Remember to be persistent. Every second , every minute , every hour . For this is the only way to conquer the mind . You must also be patient . Patient with yourself. Eventually, your mind will take up the positive practices. It is difficult, but it is possible.

So take the first step today, take it now . Work on creating a safe space for your mind, for your soul , work on creating a healthy space for your being.
